ECR Event – Publishing and Researching from the Global South: The perils and the promise

It is perhaps no surprise that the entangled politics of language, geography, identity, and the broader knowledge production dynamics continue to influence the publishing success of researchers in the Global South. In this talk, I specifically build on citation studies to argue how the current politics of citation systematically erases contributions of minoritized scholars and those in the Global South, thereby reifying the academic industrial complex that is distinctively ‘Western’. I will draw from our recent bibliometric analysis of top social science journals in health and society to demonstrate how the authors’ affiliations (a proxy for geographical location) are closely tied to their publication success.  In the process, I will briefly discuss how we might address (and disrupt)  this ‘elite capture’ in social science research in the face of growing pleas for decolonization and liberal reformism in the social sciences.  Ultimately, I hope this session will acknowledge the shared solidarities and pedagogical responsibilities transcending geographical and intellectual borders to envision an intellectual future that is democratic, diverse and balanced.
