Strand 10: Re-Imagining ‘Europe’: Imperialism, Post-State Socialism and Multiculturalism in the 21st Century

In accordance with the general theme of the conference, the “politics of location,” the strand invites papers and/or panels that are concerned with the insights we may learn from a post state-socialist Europe for a feminist vision of social and cultural communities structured by non-exclusionary relations of as well as ideas about gender and sexuality.

The possible themes and question may include:

·        the ways gender intersects with other social identities, such as national identity and new formations of social class in the transition to the market economy

·        the role of women in social movements after the regime changes in 1990

·        the impact of the enlargement of the European Union on women’s life and their networking in the post-state socialist period

·        new insight into social and cultural issues and events as a result of an open access to feminist knowledge and critical methodologies

·        the mobilization of old legacies of misogyny in the new context of transition to the market economy, with a particular focus on feminist scholarship and movement

·        the impact of gender concerning relations between minorities and majorities in the context of a multicultural Europe

·        internal and external migration from the perspective of gender relations in an allegedly multicultural Europe

·        the ir/relevance of post-feminist claims in the light of post state-socialist art-cultural practices

·        the limits of citizenship and human rights discourses in the context of resurgence of nationalism and the Religious Right and the viability of politicized identities

The strand is coordinated by Erzsébet Barát (zsazsa@lit.u-szeged.hu). Please contact us with questions or ideas.

Note that the deadline for the call for papers is August 15, 2011.
